A few weeks ago, I had my makeup done by a very personable makeup artist named Monica at a M.A.C store. Not only did she have the soft touch that comes from years of experience, she also had a flair for color and an understanding of shading and highlighting. Overall, I noticed she works with passion and that is the key for her being so good at what she does.  Therefore, I decided to interview her about different techniques of make up.

How long have you been a makeup artist?
I first started doing makeup at around age 16.  I was working at a salon at the time and fell in love with the cosmetology industry.  I started doing makeup professionally and on a freelance basis when I turned 18.  After a few years of focusing on weddings and photo shoots, I began working on smaller, low budget films.  The work environment is fast paced and a lot of fun.  It is like being a part of a team or family. Regardless of whether I am working on a bride, a photo shoot or a film, my focus has always been on beauty culture. I love being a woman and making other women feel beautiful is one of my greatest joys.

What companies have you worked for and have you seen a difference in their style of makeup?
I have worked for and with several companies, including Joe Blasco, Trucco, TIGI, On Location Artists, M.A.C and Merle Norman. The style of makeup often varied from beauty culture, trends in fashion and special effects. Each of these brands and companies are supportive of the artists that use them and encourage them to be creative.  M.A.C has been my favorite company to work for, which is why I returned after four years.  They are not only one of the top brands in the industry, but they are also the only brand I can remember ever really wanting to work for since I was a young artist. I absolutely love the products and their concepts.

What can you tell our readers about choosing a good makeup artist for special occasions?
I think one of the most important things you can do if you plan on having your make up done for a special occasion is plan ahead and allow yourself enough time for a trial appointment.  This is especially important when planning to get your make up done for engagement photos or for weddings.  Finding an artist that can bring your vision to life and one who understands your personal style will result in a make up application that you will absolutely love.

What are some of the basic colors for summer?
I really love all of the bronze colors that are accented with a bit of brightness that I am seeing in magazines.  I also see several designers bringing a sophisticated look to the trend front lines.  Bold lips and eyes are no longer juxtaposed.  You can do both without being too overdone.  I love the peaches and bronze colors on the eyes and cheeks for fair skin tones and the blues and greens on the eyes for the darker skin tones.  I love a juicy and glossy tangerine lip with the bronze colors or a slick and glossy red stain for the darker colors.

This spring and summer cat eyes are very much the trend. Do you have any suggestion as how to create the look?
I love a clean and almost glossy eyelid with a beautiful cat-eyeliner.  For more control with the thickness and placement of the line, I recommend having a few things: a good liquid liner, a liner brush and pre moistened q-tips for easy clean up and shaping.  With those tools and a little practice, any one can do the cat eye look.

Step 1: Extract some of the liquid liner onto the back of your hand or another surface.

Step 2: Looking down into a compact or vanity mirror (so that your eyelid is flat), dip your liner brush into the product and begin to apply the liner onto lash line.

Step 3: Placing the liner brush at an angle that you would like your cat eye to end on the outer corner of the eye, start to apply the liner towards the inner corners of your lash line (make sure the liner is thicker on the outer corners of your eyelid).

Step 4: Use your pre-moistened q-tips to clean up the edges and shape the winged out liner to your taste.

Extra tip: Don’t be afraid to play around with your products in your spare time and find your own way of applying them.  Also, visiting an artist close to you and asking for a demonstration or a “how to” can also be very helpful.
