Tell the readers a little bit about yourself and what you are doing. I am an Iranian-Armenian prosecutor with the Orange County District Attorney’s Office and I am running for Orange County Superior Court Judge to fill the seat of the retiring Judge Frank F. Fasel. I am running in the upcoming June Primary Election on June 8, 2010. It is a county-wide race, which means all Orange County registered voters are eligible to vote for me.
I have been an attorney for nearly thirteen years and while at the DA’s office I have been vigilant in fighting on behalf of victims of crime to stand up for them and their rights while doing my best to hold serious and violent criminals accountable for their actions by making sure they are incarcerated.
What is your background? I am an Iranian-Armenian born in London, England and whose roots extend to Tehran, Iran to this day. My parents were born and raised in Tehran, and I lived there for the first few years of my life. While my family had a successful business in Tehran, my parents made the difficult choice of leaving their home country, just prior to the Revolution, to provide an opportunity for their children to thrive without the threat of civil unrest.
In 1977 we immigrated to Los Angeles and my parents still live in the same home in which I grew up. After law school at Santa Clara University, I moved to Orange County and I have lived here ever since. My wife and I live with our two young daughters, Ava and Ani, in Tustin. Everyone who knows me knows how proud I am of my heritage and culture, and how much I try to instill those values in my children.
I am very much looking forward to being the first Superior Court Judge in Orange County, as far as I know, to have roots from Iran. I am certain that as a judge here in Orange County, the Iranian community will be proud to have one of their sons in the position of being a respected member of the Orange County community who can bring honor and praise to his people.
Who are some of the supporters of your campaign? Being a Superior Court Judge is a non-partisan position and I am very proud of my broad based, bipartisan support.
Having said that, I am most honored to be supported by Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas, for whom I have worked for many years. In addition, I am endorsed by two former governors of California; Governor George Deukmejian and Governor Pete Wilson.
Also, I have bipartisan support from the California Legislature; State Senators Mimi Walters, Tom Harman and Lou Correa and every single California State Assembly Member from Orange County, such as Diane Harkey, Chuck De Vore, Chris Norby, Jose Solorio, and Van Tran, just to name some. More locally, three Orange County Supervisors, Janet Nguyen, Bill Campbell, Pat Bates, and Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens, have endorsed me.
Lastly, literally thousands of police officers and hundreds of judges and fellow prosecutors support me.
Who are you running against in this election? While I want to run a positive campaign which focuses on my strengths and philosophies, people often ask me about my opponent. I will briefly mention he is a family law attorney who focuses on handling people’s divorce cases and their child custody battles. Based on my work experience, I believe I am undoubtedly the candidate committed to public safety and being tough on crime. When I talk about protecting victims from society’s predators, I have the track record to back that up. A vote for me will be a vote for keeping our neighborhoods, schools, and parks safe for our children for years to come.
How can the Iranian Community help you? My friends in the Orange County Iranian community can be of great help to me by not only making sure they vote for me in this election, but by spreading the word to their friends, family members, neighbors, and co-workers. It is critical for me to get the message of my candidacy to the people that make up the backbone of my campaign. Iranians have traditionally been very civic minded and powerful at the voting booths, and on June 8, 2010, I need the votes.
Having said this, every successful election is funded by generous contributors who believe in their candidate. Mine will be no different. A county-wide race in Orange County can be costly and I am hopeful that I am worthy of their financial support as well.
