Irvine's Adult School

One of the reasons the city of Irvine is among the most highly regarded cities nationwide is its dedication of resources to its citizens. A shining example of this is the Irvine Adult School, serving all the denizens of Irvine. The IAS offers English classes, community education and personal development, job training and computer courses. This month, we are honored to have an exclusive interview with IAS administrator Karen Bautista.


Is the Irvine Adult School a part of the Irvine School System?
The Irvine Adult School is the adult school that offers programs under the auspices of the Irvine Unified School District.

Why does the Irvine Adult School need to charge for its classes and how much is the fee?
The law that governed adult schools changed last January and many school districts decided to use the adult school funding to support K-12 programs.  This is why the Irvine Adult School classes cost money.  Most classes are $80 for a once a week class and $128 for a twice a week class.

What does the Irvine Adult School offer to the people of Irvine and how does Irvine benefit from having an Adult School?
Irvine Adult School offers classes in many areas.  These areas are:  English as a Second Language (ESL), Career Education (computers, teacher aide, GED preparation, Florist), Parent Education (Helping your child succeed in school), Exam Preparation (SAT Preparation, TOEFL Preparation, Citizenship) and many more new classes to come.  Irvine definitely benefits from the adult school classes because they specifically focus on delivering the education that adults need and desire.  The classes have great value because the teachers deliver quality instruction.

Who attends the Irvine Adult School?  
30% of our students are parents of children in the Irvine Unified School District.  All our students value education and believe in “learning for life.”

How can the community help to promote the Adult Program?
Irvine Adult School would like to partner with community groups for several reasons.  Irvine Adult School wants to be responsive to educational needs for all adults in the community.  If there is a need for a class that is not offered elsewhere, we want to evaluate that need and create that educational opportunity, if possible.  Our Winter Term registration begins January 5, 2010.  Please visit our website in January to see a complete schedule of classes for the winter and spring terms:  www.irvineadultschool.com.
