In her short time in the spotlight so far, Parisa Katakis has shown herself to be a shining example of talent, beauty, and grace. She has already worked with major companies like Sephora, MAC makeup, Jones New York, and automobile companies Audi, Ferrari and Maserati. Her success is built in no small part on her exotic beauty, but also her sparkling personality. So keep a look out for Parisa; we'll surely be seeing more from her.Tell me a little about yourself. Growing up in Washington State, were you exposed to Persian Culture and traditions?
Although I was born in Washington State, I grew up in Reno, Nevada. My father’s studies were what brought my parents to America with our final residence being Reno at that time. When I was growing up in Reno, the Iranian community was quite small, me always being the only Iranian girl in my school. Although it was small, it was a very tight community and we all knew each other. Most of the Iranian community consisted of all students in my parent’s age group and our traditions were always present and very strong. I remember the mayor of Reno used to come to all of our Norooz festivities because as a community we brought everyone together and always celebrated great parties at the best venues.

How did you get involved in modeling?
I got involved in modeling at the age of 9 as a hobby.  I signed with an agency in Reno and my first job was booked not too long after for a “Back to School Sale” ad for Parklane Mall. I still have the ad! It was so much fun.

Was your family supportive of your decision to get involved in the entertainment industry?
Absolutely. As long as my studies came first, which they always did, they were very supportive. Modeling in grade school, most of my jobs consisted of fashion shows and occasional print ad- always age appropriate. I actually didn’t start pursuing modeling and acting on a professional level again until 2 years ago. I took a long break in between grade school and college as there would be no time to focus on anything else but school.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of your career so far?
Being able to represent such clients such as Sephora, Macys, MAC Cosmetics, The Sharper Image, etc.  As an Iranian American, to be able to break the mold of the “ideal size” and the “ideal look” makes me proud.

What is your ultimate career goal?
Well to be honest, I don’t necessarily look at this profession as a career, it’s more of a hobby that I truly enjoy taking a part of. I do have goals I strive for within this hobby and that is to maybe be the face of a great cosmetics line. My career is in Real Estate sales which I thoroughly enjoy. I am passionate about people, and when I make my clients happy, I have met my goal.

Do you feel a responsibility or any pressure representing Iranians in the work that you do? If so, how do you deal with that?
There is always going to be a level of pressure no matter how you look at it. Being an Iranian born and raised in the United States, there is going to be that balance you strive for as it’s hard to appease everyone. As an Iranian, I value my culture and with that come strong morals and values thus limiting me on what I can do as a model without compromising my “sangeen boodan”. On the other hand, with my American culture comes freedom of expression which allows me to be free and be seen as an artist with all projects I am a part of. These two cannot go hand in hand with complete harmony and the best way I deal with it is that as long as I don’t compromise myself and establish boundaries, then I know I can be the best I can in whatever I do.

What advice do you have for young Persians who want to get involved in modeling?
My advice is to just follow your dreams. Sometimes as Middle Easterns, we feel we are limited to what we can and should do with our lives. If modeling is something you are interested in doing, like with anything else, there are proper venues to follow. Do your research. Look for agencies in your town and follow their guidelines. Some agencies want you to bring in professional pictures while others only want to see digital shots. Gather as much information you can and be sure to never be fooled.  You don’t always have to spend a lot of money. Representation is the most important thing because you are letting a professional guide your career. Last and most importantly, have fun with it! If someone says no, don’t take it personally, just move on to the next.

What projects do you have coming up?
I am a spokesperson with the American Heart Association and I am looking forward to future speaking engagements. I tragically lost my father to heart disease at the age of 44, so the subject and the organization is something very dear to me.
