In this day and age one can very easily feel as if they have no say in how the world turns. There are people in positions of power who make the decisions that affect our daily lives. These people very rarely have to answer to those they are serving and representing which greatly increases the chances of corruption, negligence, or outright incompetence. There is an occasion when a group of people, if united, can make their voices heard. It requires a lot of independent thinking as well as a myriad of inquiries, but if one is willing to put the time and energy into making this pivotal decision one can expect to receive an exorbitant return on their investment. This opportunity for change is now. It's no surprise that many find themselves so apathetic to the concept of politics that they do not believe that one miniscule vote could make a difference. If you happen to be one of these people take heart to this fact; the Founding Fathers chose English over German as the nation’s official language by one vote. In that incident one vote meant everything. In the upcoming election one vote will mean the same. The Presidential Primaries have already foreshadowed that in this election there will be no certain or predictable outcome. This is an opportunity for all communities within the United States to have their presence felt. As Iranian-Americans, each vote is vital to the stability and success of our constituency group not only at the local level, but at the international scene as well. It cannot be denied that there is a constant tie between those who reside here in our father country, the United States and those who are still proud residents of our mother country, Iran. When America selects its next leader it should undoubtedly choose a figure that will vie for an open dialogue between the two nations without hidden agendas or ulterior motives. Our mother country has greatly increased its presence on the international stage and as such the representative from our father country will have to be willing and able to engage in what the future holds in store for our parent countries. Considering the state of international affairs and the rise of anti-Middle Eastern sentiments across the United States the time is now for Iranian-Americans to claim their freedom and democracy through the electoral process. All eligible Iranian-Americans should register to vote, follow the presidential candidates carefully as they campaign for the White House, and come Election Day vote for the candidate they deem the most suitable for the position of President of United States. Considering the tension between Iran and the U.S. the repercussions could be catastrophic. Iranian-Americans have been known to be extremely well informed, well educated, diverse and highly involved in their community’s decisions. This ability should not waver due to apathy, cynicism, or mere ignorance. This constituency group may never get an opportunity to be so imperative in an election. Iranian-Americans should take this opportunity to vote in record numbers so that in the future, other political candidates will finally realize how imperative the Iranian-American vote really is. to be continued...
