On February 28, 2010 Los Angeles Times reporter Borzou Daragahi said that Iranian opposition leader Mir-Hossein Mousavi accused the Iranian Government of wasting public resources -- calling the country’s hard-line leadership a dictatorship and distortion of the Islamic Revolution.
Mousavi told the Times that increasing the level of people’s awareness is not achieved only in street protest, but also in boosting the level of public awareness. This is the main strategy of the Green Movement.
At the Santa Monica Pier a group of Iranians are bringing awareness by petitioning, and getting Californians and Iranians voices heard.
Sophia Sadighpour is a supporter of Mournful Mothers of Iran. She was explaining to a group of people while looking at the hanging pictures of the young protesters who have been murdered in the streets of Tehran about the tragedy that has taken place. She said that during the most recent Iranian election, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Iran cheated in the election ballots. A peaceful protest turned into bloodshed of activism. So many people were killed and jailed during the protest.
After the election fraud many people stormed the streets asking, “Where is my vote?”
“Many were put in jail, tortured or disappeared. After this our committee was asking, ‘Who killed our children?,’” said Sadighpour supporter of The Mournful Mothers of Iran movement. She said that every week the Mournful Mothers gather in the park and hold up pictures of their children who were killed.
“All we want is justice for the people killed, freedom of the political prisoners, and the stopping of executions,” Sophia said.
“The government will not allow the protests to go on,” said Sadighpour, “so the Iranian people want to allow for national involvement.”
The Mournful Mothers of Iran have been on Santa Monica Pier every Saturday night since mid- August informing people about the situation in Iran. They are trying to get people to help sign their petition to the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, to bring information about human rights, raise awareness, and bring in international intervention to the people of Iran.
“We need the UN to really do their part to investigate what is really happening in Iran,” said Sadighpour.
The Iranian government has blocked the Internet and will not allow any access to the press, and also has sent activists and journalist to prison.
About six weeks ago the Mournful Mothers took part in a global hunger strike to stop execution and release political prisoners. “We try to use any opportunity to reflect their voices,” Sadighpour said. The mothers want justice and ask people around the world to get together and reflect.
“We the Mournful Mothers of Iran try to be the voice of the protesters,” said Sadighpour.
