In Memoriam: World Famous DJ Mehdi
By StaffReports have confirmed that the beloved French DJ and hip-hop/electro producer has been killed in a tragic accident. Resident Advisor reported that Mehdi fell to his death from a mezzanine along with two friends, both of whom have been hospitalized, while Mixmag stated he fell off the roof of his home in France.
Though the details are still murky, the devastating news of the master mixer’s death has already shaken the music community. Longtime friends and collaborators Chromeo tweeted “We lost our brother. No words.” earlier this morning. “I have no words. My heart is completely shattered. Not this,” wrote A-trak, echoing the thoughts of many a friend and music fan.
Mehdi Favéris-Essadi, known as DJ Mehdi, was only 34 years old but had already managed to make a huge impact on both the hip-hop and electro scenes during the course of his vibrant career as one of France’s premier underground producers. For more than a decade, he crossed artistic boundaries by mixing genres, influences and styles. As a hip-hop producer in the mid-late 1990’s, he contributed to the growth and recognition of rap music in France, a genre that was still considered ‘infamous’ at the time, freeing it from its artistic ghetto with a powerful combination of deep-rooted rap influences and electronic beats and giving birth to what’s now considered the ‘classic’ French rap canon in the process.
A key member of the Paris-based Ed Banger Records crew, Mehdi, along with label mates Justice, SebastiAn, Feadz, and label owner and close friend Busy P, gave birth to the “new” French Touch electro scene, and collaborated with the likes of Daft Punk, Chromeo, and Cassius. Most recently, he was working on a project called Carte Blanche with French electronic musician Riton, who was reportedly on the scene at the time of the accident.
DJ Mehdi is survived by his wife, the French model and artist Fafi. Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to his friends and family.
